Amy Campbell, Editor amy.campbell@informa.com O ne of my favorite activities in high school was assemblies. Typically held on a Friday, these events were a break from class as well as a chance to mingle with friends and, of course, to celebrate our school pride. Students huddled together on the gymnasium bleachers while the school's marching band, cheerleaders and other "spirit ambassadors" whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Whether we were gearing up for a sports game or reveling in another school-related victory, these gatherings brought students together for a moment of solidarity. At the center of the party was our school mascot, a sleek black panther, who'd run around offering high-fives, leading students in the "wave" or performing outrageous stunts. The panther could be found just about everywhere at our school—painted outside the gym, emblazoned on T-shirts and even in our fight song. Our mascot was a symbol of our pride and unity, but also of our success as students, athletes, teachers and administrators—a community. When you think about symbols of success, what comes to mind? Perhaps it's one of the icons on this month's cover, which represent both hard work and the reward of accomplishment, which can be measured in many ways. In this issue, we celebrate self-storage companies that have attained success in their own way. The winners of our annual "Best of Business" poll, which asks our readers to vote for their favorite product and service suppliers in 40 categories, are honored in the pages ahead. You'll find the complete list of winners on page 14, followed by profiles about many of these exceptional enterprises. Each year we ask our champs a series of questions to help you know them better. This year's queries delved into what they love about the storage industry, challenges they face (and how they overcome them), upcoming product releases and—you guessed it—company mascots. (If they don't have one, we asked what it would be and why.) Their responses may surprise you. We've even included photos of some in the profiles. As we celebrate this year's champions, it's important to keep in mind they only represent a handful of the quality vendors in the industry. From finance firms to developers, retail merchandisers to consultants, there are hundreds of experts who want to help your self-storage operation thrive. Never be afraid to tap into these great resources. To access a comprehensive directory of suppliers with contact information and product descriptions, visit our free online Buyer's Guide at insideselfstorage.com/bg. As we near the end of 2018, it's a great time to reflect on your own accomplishments over the past 12 months. What feats stand out for you, your staff and your business? Whether they're big or small, celebrate them. It's time to take pride in your company—no mascot required! All my best, THE INSIDE VIEW Congratulations to all of this year's Best of Business winners. Cheers, too, to the thousands of readers who voted in the 2018 campaign. We appreciate your participation, and the industry's vendors are grateful for your love and support. Thank you! Felicitations! 4 ISS I November 2018 www.insideselfstorage.com
